About Public Health Program

The Public Health Program at PSM responds to the public health needs of modern society. It provides an academic environment with multiple disciplines and with academic collaboration in which teaching, research, and community service makes it possible to contribute to the development of health promotion and protection and the prevention of disease in the community.

The Public Health Program offers the followings degrees: DrPH in Epidemiology, MPH with tracks in Epidemiology, Environmental Health, and General. The MPH Program was approved in 2002 by the Puerto Rico Council of Higher Education (PRCHE). The Public Health Program application to the Council on Education of Public Health (CEPH) for accreditation as a Public Health Program was filed on August 28, 2007 and it is expected by July 2009.

 

Mission

The mission of the Public Health Program is to prepare graduate level public health professionals with a multidisciplinary background, through teaching, research, and community service. This preparation will facilitate the development of the necessary competencies for promoting and protecting health and preventing disease in the community, taking into account the individual and collective rights and the social and cultural differences that distinguish human beings.

 

Goal Statements

Instruction: The Public Health Program has the main goal, preparing professionals with the capacity to identify and to evaluate the Puerto Rican population health needs. Plan, implement, and evaluate programs to address those needs.

Research: Advance in the knowledge and understanding of the determining factor that affect the health status of the populations through basic and applied research in all five major disciplines of public health with a view to reducing the prevailing causes of morbidity and mortality

Service: Through the five major disciplines of public health, the Public health Program will create links to local, national, and international communities to the improvement of the overall health of the population by providing quality health services, technical assistance and advisory services.

 

 

Public Health Program - Historical Timeless

  • 1977- Ponce School of Medicine founded by Catholic University

  • 1980- Ponce School of Medicine Foundation

  •  2002- Initiation of the Public Health Program

  •  2007- The PR-CHE authorizes a new:

    • MPH in Epidemiology

    • MPH in Environmental Health

    • Dr.PH in Epidemiology

  • The Public Health Program application to the Council on Education of Public Health (CEPH) for accreditation as a Public Health Program was filed on August 28, 2007 and it is expected by July 2009.
