Welcome

Each summer the department provides research training to selected medical students through the Medical Student Summer Research Program.

The program provides interested students with an opportunity to participate in biomedical research experiences related to oncology and to be introduced to the clinical problems presented by cancer patients. By the end of the rotation, the student should be able to:

  1. Be familiar with the safety procedures and practices of a research laboratory and handling of chemical and reagents.

  2. Understand how to maintain accurate records of all scientific experimentation by means of a laboratory notebook.

  3. Understand basic principles and steps of the scientific method when applied to clinical and basic research.

  4. Understand and be able to differentiate amongst different study designs used in molecular epidemiology studies.

  5. Formulate a research question and related hypotheses using the scientific method.

  6. Learn basic techniques commonly used in bench science such as pipetting, weighing chemicals, pH adjustment, preparation of solutions, use of chemical and laminar flow hoods.

  7. Learn more advanced techniques used for cell and tissue culturing by means of sterile techniques.

  8. Fractionate and purify various cellular components present in blood.

  9. Learn to perform the host cell reactivation assay for measuring DNA repair capacity in human lymphocytes.

  10. Learn basic principles of polymerase chain reaction (PCR).

  11. Identify and use basic statistical tests for data analysis.

  12. Use the SPSS software fot statistical and epidemiological analysis.

  13. Analyze epidemiological data obtained from questionnaires.

  14. Understand some basic principles utilized in modern cancer research.

  15. Analyze scientific literature (papers) in cancer and epidemiology.

  16. Sterilize waste, medium, distilled water and some materials like
