The Department of Physiology of the Ponce School of Medicine is supported by a staff of 17 people, including four technicians, a secretary, eight graduate students (six Ph.D. and three Psy.D.), and five faculty members. The Department has been awarded for excellence on various occasions as Department of the Year by the medical students.
The Department of Physiology offers a comprehensive study of the function of the Human body, from the molecular and cellular levels, up to an organ and total organism level. A special emphasis is placed on the application of physiologic concepts to medical problem solving. This is accomplished offering three main courses: Medical Physiology, Special Topics in Physiology, and Neuroscience.
Courses include lectures, small group discussions, laboratory and computer assisted instruction. Case studies are used to apply physiologic principles to the solution of problems in patient care setting.
Evaluation is by means of departmental exams, which include a USMLE type format examination for medical students and a combination of this format and essay questions for graduate students working towards a Ph.D. degree.
