In Puerto Rico and as
established by the PR Board of Medical Examiners, residents are
required to possess either a provisional license per academic year
or a permanent license with a current registration. Residents, prior
to the beginning of each academic year, are responsible for
requesting their provisional license to the PR Board of Medical
Examiners and to include all affiliated institutions of the Ponce
School of Medicine Psychiatry Residency Program. i.e.:Hospital Dr.
Pilas; UPR Hospital, Hospital San Lucas, San Juan VA Caribbean
Healthcare System ( Previously known as San Juan VAMC), First
Hospital Panamericano,, Concilio Salud Integral de Loiza, Mayaguez
Outpatient Clinic (CSCO/Ponce Healthcare system)..
Our program will require for candidates who graduate in USA medical
schools, Step1 & 2 of the USLME prior to beginning their PGY-I year.
Residents should have passed Step 1 & 2(CK and CS) of the USMLE
prior to beginning; It is also expected that the resident pass USMLE
III before PGY-III level. Foreign graduates should have the
permanent license or ECFMG certificate; they are strongly encouraged
to obtain step 1 and 2 of the USMLE.
The USMLE exams were computerized in November 1999 and are now
available throughout the year, but the application must be made six
to eight weeks in advance of the desired exam date. This flexibility
also applies to retaking any step of the exam, with the caveat in
the printed description from the USMLE that “you may take the step
no less than 60 days after your most recent examination date, and
you may take the step no more than 3 times within a 12 month
period”.
