CAPSI PROGRAM

Philosophy of the Program

The program is based on a psychoeducational philosophy. The participants receive psychological counseling within a coordinated multidisciplinary and integrated model. In addition, the program looks tries to facilitate access to other services, while the participant receives services within the center.

Participants

People who have lived or are living within a domestic violence situation, referrals from Department of Children and Families, Police Domestic Violence Unit, Julia de Burgos Women’s Shelter or auto- referrals.

COPA PROGRAM

Mission

It is a prevention and training program addressed to students, teachers, non faculty and support staff, parents and members of the community whom are part of the public school region of Ponce. Its goal is to reduce violent incidents, drug use and improve the quality of life within the school community. It also promotes the peaceful and safe coexistence that strengthens the teaching-learning process.

Vision

To promote the social re-adaptation of the school community through the training in the reduction of risk factors and the development of protective factors in regards to school violence and drug use.

Description of the Program

Through the Title IV program, part A, “Secure Schools and Communities, Free from Drugs and Violence” section 4114, Ponce School of Medicine submits to the Department of Education the development of the Peaceful Coexistence Project, Phase I (COPA, for its initials in Spanish). The Phase I of the Peaceful Coexistence Project focuses on the prevention of violence and drug use through strategies to help counter the risk factors for violence. To such effects the Project pretends to stimulate the protective factors that counter the negative impact of the risk factors associated with violence.

PROPA PROGRAM

Vision

Reduce the population of individuals with tendencies to behave aggressively within sentimental relationships.

Mission

Improve the quality of life for families within the Ponce region whom are going through domestic violence problems, by strengthening their interpersonal relationship and conflict management skills, with the goal of reducing the incidence of violent acts in the couple.

Objectives

  • Provide aid within the reeducation program to individuals who commit violence in their relationship.

  • Reduce the incidence of violent acts and emotional maltreatment; achieve an effective and healthy couple’s relationship.

  • Improve the quality of life of the Puerto Rican family.

MAS PROGRAM

Mission

Reduce the negative emotional effects suffered by children who are victims of sexual abuse.

Vision

To validate the testimony of minors who have allegedly been sexually abused and promote a better quality of life through psychological intervention and treatment.

Program objectives

  • Develop a validation process and psychological treatment for sexually abused minors.

  • Encourage minors to express their feelings and emotions about the traumatic incident.

  • Promote improved self esteem skills.

  • Familiarize both the minors and non offending caretakers about the legal process (court).

  • Orient and educate non offending family members about the aspects concerning sexual abuse in children.

  • Foment awareness in our society, beginning with minors, about the sexual abuse problem.

  • Educate academic institutions (public and private schools) through the use of conferences in order to sensitize and inform them about the sexual abuse topic.

  • Collaborate in the formation of new mental health professionals from the Clinical Psychology Doctoral Program of the Ponce School of Medicine, by offering them the necessary skills so they may in turn provide services to this population within private practice settings.
