Welcome to Psychiatry and
Human Behavior |
Mission
and Goals |
The
Department of Psychiatry and Human Behavior is one of the Clinical
Departments of Ponce School of Medicine. The focus of our curriculum is to expose our students to learning activities that will be similar to those anticipated for practicing physicians in any specialty.
The department has developed a Behavioral Health Division which offers mental health services to indigent communities. Six mental health outpatient clinics were established in the towns of Mayagüez, Aguadilla, Orocovis, Ponce, Coamo, and Guayama for this purpose and offer services to the participants of the Puerto Rico Healthcare Reform. Our students participate with a multidisciplinary mental health team in the evaluation, treatment and rehabilitation of children, adolescents, young adults and elderly patients.
In addition, the Department has developed a Psychiatry Residency Training Program in agreement with the San Juan Veterans Hospital initiated in in July 2002.
The Department is also involved with several grant projects, including child and adolescent alcohol abuse intervention, the evaluation and monitoring of young mothers and their toddlers (through the Head Start Program) and mental health services to HIV patients (Ryan White Program), among others. |
