In accordance with the mission of the Ponce School of Medicine to provide for the education of individuals to become competent physicians with social and community awareness, who will contribute to the health and well being of society, the Department of Surgery aims to provide the students with the basic knowledge in general surgery and the surgical specialties necessary to achieve this goal. In addition, the Department of Surgery strives to develop in the medical student the interpersonal skills, professional attitudes and educational attitudes essential to utilize the acquired knowledge for the benefit and well being of the Puerto Rican society.
Since the majority of the medical students will probably become primary physicians and/or will pursue other medical specialties, the clinical clerkship in surgery will be the only in-depth exposure to the surgical treatment of disease in a tertiary institution for these students. Through interaction with competent surgeons in the Operating Room, the Emergency Room and in the management of in-patients and ambulatory patients, the student should become familiar with the most common surgical procedures including the preoperative evaluation and the postoperative course.
Through this exposure, the student should be better prepared to identify surgical conditions in his patient and to adequately refer the patient for surgical treatment when such treatment is to contribute to the patient's well being.
