Research Interest
Our research focuses in the Renin-Angiotensine-Aldosterone system but with aspects related to aging, proinflammatory and profibrotic mechanisms and the insulin-resistance. The hypothesis of our work leads in the mitochondrial function, where most of these mechanisms already mentioned take place. Blocking Angiotensin II may decrease the intramithochondiral oxidative stress, changing the biology of the cell, regulating apoptosis and other common mechanisms in cardiovascular diseases.
Research Support
Ontarget Study 2002-Present
Boehringer Ingelheim
Clinical Pharmacology Research: ONTARGET will assess the efficacy of the angiotensin II receptor blocker Telmisartan alone, and in combination with the angiotensin converting enzyme inhibitor ramipril, and will compare these to the efficacy of ramipril alone. Endpoints will include the reduction of risk of cardiovascular mortality, stroke, myocardial infarction and hospitalization for congestive heart failure. Role: Co-Investigator
