The primary goal of
the MBRS SCORE Program for the Ponce School of Medicine is
to improve the research capacity of basic and clinical
investigators. In addition to contributing to the
improvement of the faculty who are funded by the Program
directly, it is expected that other faculty and students
will also benefit from the improved research environment
provided by the MBRS SCORE Program. A corollary of the
improvement of the research capacity and research
environment for faculty is that students will also reap the
benefit of the more supportive and stimulating environment.
The component of this interaction pertaining to students
directly will be evaluated within the context of the MBRS
RISE Program which started its operations this past July
2008. This sister program will focus on students and faculty
training while the MBRS SCORE focuses on actual hands on
research projects in faculty laboratories. Obviously, the
two programs will be intimately intertwined. Thus,
successful faculty research generates expanding student
interest in, and commitment to, pursuit of careers in
biomedical research. Interested and motivated students in
turn will encourage and stimulate further development of
faculty research endeavors.
In September, 2008, 10 projects were submitted to NIGMS for
the new MBRS SCORE SC Program which is scheduled to begin at
PSM in July, 2009.
