The
Fifth Pathway is an academic program that was created in 1971
by the Council on Medical Education (CME) of the American
Medical Association (AMA).
The Program consists of an academic year of supervised
clinical training at a teaching hospital affiliated to a
medical school accredited by the Liaison Committee on Medical
Education (LCME). Ponce
School of Medicine developed a Fifth Pathway Program that
enrolled its first group of students on February 2003. This
Program has been recognized by the American Medical
Association (AMA), the Liaison Committee on Medical Education
(LCME) and the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical
Graduates (ECFMG).
After
completing the Program students receive a certificate and are
eligible to apply to residency programs accredited by the
Accreditation Council on Graduate Medical Education (ACGME).
To receive this certificate the student must complete
all requirements established by PSM and obtain a USMLE Step 2
