Program Mission
|
|
The mission of the Master
in Public Health (MPH) is to prepare public health professionals
at the graduate level with a multidisciplinary background,
through teaching, research and community service. This
preparation will facilitate the development of the necessary
competencies for promoting and protecting health and preventing
diseases in the community, taking into account the individual
and collective rights and the social and cultural differences
that distinguish human beings.
As part of Ponce School of Medicine, our mission is to provide
high quality education, research and health services in
medicine, biological sciences, clinical psychology, public
health, and other healthcare fields, to the Puerto Rican
population, through an innovative health sciences curriculum,
while preparing students to be ethical practitioners and
scientists.

| Program
Description |
The MPH Program was established
in response to the needs of our society. It provides a
multidisciplinary two-year program (General, Epidemiology or
Environmental) through education, investigation and community
service to develop the skills of a public health professional
necessary for the protection of health and prevention of disease
of the individuals and communities.
Classes are offered on a trimester basis, Mondays to Thursdays,
from 5:00 pm to 9:00 pm.
Cost per credit is $210.00 (USD) for residents and $263.00 for
non-resident. Other annual fees apply.
Registration, orientation period and commencement of classes
take place during second half of July.

| Admission
Requirements |

Bachelor’s degree of
a college level institution accredited by the PR Council
of Higher Education or by a US Department of Education
recognized accrediting organization.

GPA – 2.50 is
requested for applying, however our classes average is
3.2 (on a four-point scale)

- EXADEP, GRE or MCAT examinations
- Submit the following documents:
- Official transcript from all
undergraduate and graduate institutions attended.
- Official GRE, EXADEP or MCAT
scores (if the candidate does not hold a health
professional degree). The scores must be no more than
five years earlier.
- Three
letters of recommendation
- Two of the letters of
recommendation should provide input from people in
responsible position who can comment on your
academic, employment or volunteer performance,
character and interest. For undergraduate this often
means professors, academic advisors or employer.
- The third letter must be of
someone who is able to asses your advocacy
experience. Letters from people that really know
you, rather than from people who have impressive
titles, are the most valuable. All of them should be
written using the format accompanying the
application form.

| Selection
Criteria |
|
The Admissions’ Committee selects the best candidates. The
Committee looks for accepting students of integrity and maturity
that show concern for others, leadership potential, character.
In evaluating the applicants, emphasis is placed upon the
following:

Potential to work with
individuals, analytical skills and understanding of ethical
standards of the profession.

Past experience in research
projects or potential for the development of research
skills.

Academic achievement (GRE,
EXADEP, MCAT scores)

Motivation and emotional
stability
-
Letters of recommendation
(see previous description)

Interview
-
Writing skills sample - will
be documented in the interview.
Upon acceptance, all
students are required to submit the following:

Written confirmation
of acceptance and a deposit of $100.00 to secure your seat
in the entering class.

Physical Exam
-
Evidence of up to date
immunization certificate, including Hepatitis B.
