Guidance and counseling, both
individual and group, are available as services to students for
academic, personal, family and social matters. We encourage all
students to seek assistance whenever academic difficulties, family
conflicts, personal or other problems affect their well-being. Our
mission is to facilitate the development of our students in order to
maximize their academic achievements while meeting the challenges of
their multiple responsibilities.
The Guidance Counselor offers individual and group counseling,
crisis intervention, and other services as needed to our students,
faculty and administration. All counseling sessions and inquiries
will be kept confidential. The Guidance Counselor may refer some
situations to specialized professionals. Professional counseling,
psychological and psychiatric services are offered through the
Office of Students Affairs.
The Guidance Counselor will support students in their efforts to
succeed in their graduate studies. The counselor will provide
information regarding professional test requirements, summer
programs and opportunities for professional growth and development.
Individual and group guidance and counseling topics include:
decision making methods, career decisions, residencies, mental
health, interpersonal relations, assertiveness, conflict management,
stress management, learning styles, time management, personality
self-inventories, attitudes, interests, emotional wellbeing and
others.
The Dean of Student Affairs and the Guidance Counselor offer career
counseling. Career counseling provides a better understanding of
internships, scholarships, fellowships, the National Residency
Matching Program (NRMP), Medical Licensure Exams (MLE) and
Electronic Residency Application System (ERAS). The career
counseling service also teaches skills for conducting a better
interview, writing an effective Curriculum Vitae and implementing
the tools offered by the Careers In Medicine program.
Careers in Medicine, (CiM), is a career planning program designed to
assist students in choosing a medical specialty and aid in the
process of selecting and applying to a residency program. Only MD
students will have access to CiM. A four-phase process guides
students through the elements of career planning. This includes
self-understanding, exploring a variety of medical careers, and
finally choosing a specialty to meet their career objectives. Those
who select careers that match their values, skills and interests
tend to be more satisfied and successful in their working lives.
