Choosing a specialty is an important decision for
medical students and one that many students struggle with. PSM
Faculty Advising Program is designed to help students in their
career planning and in finding the specialty or other medical career
that fits them best. It is supported by the Guidance Counselor
Office. A Faculty Advisor (FA) may be staff from academic affairs,
basic or clinical science, or they may be preceptors or alumni.
Having a good mix of faculty and other staff can be very useful in
providing students a broad range of perspectives on medical school
and specialty selection.
The purpose of the Faculty Advising Program is to provide structured
professional and social support, as well as guidance, using
different resources.
Throughout the Careers in Medicine (a four-year career-planning web
program designed by the Association of American Medical Colleges) FA
and students can obtain current information and statistic from about
125 specialties. Careers in Medicine (CiM) is a four-step program
designed to assist students in understanding their options for
choosing a specialty and applying to a residency program. CiM is
used as part of our Career Counseling Service during the four years
of the MD Program. We think that the most effective approach
includes a combined effort led by the school’s Counselor, Dean of
Students Affairs, the Faculty Advisor and the student himself.
The resources, guidance, and feedback FA provides are an integral
part of helping students with there choice. Through your assistance
as an advisor, you are indirectly influencing the lives of patients
served by these future physicians. Therefore, the advisor's role is
critical to the career success of physicians-in-training.

Faculty Advisor from our clinical departments in accordance with
student’s career preference. FA will continue to advice students
through their third and fourth year assuming their career
preferences do not change. Any request to change advisor should be
brought to the Professional Counselor.
We understand that both our faculty and students are very busy but
face to face contact should occur at least once a semester.
Faculty Advising Program’s resources will be sent to each FA by
email, and that information will be available at the PSM Web-site. A
manual for our Advisors provided by AAMC is available at this link:
Advisor Manual. It is important that each FA take a one-hour seminar
about Careers In Medicine in coordination with the Dean of Student
Affairs. In this seminar each FA will know CiM at a glance, and
register in this AAMC program.
