In accordance with the law
#152 of June 3, 1976 and amend by law#82 of Sept. 1, 1990 the
optician are the only personnel authorized to prepare eyeglasses and
or contact lenses prescribe by an ophthalmologist and or an
optometrist.
The optician must be licensed under the guideline set forth by law #
11 of June 23, 1976 by the Department of Health aimed to provide the
best quality possible and excellence in service.
Most recently, the optician became collegiate, by majority of votes.
The New organization is known as the “Colegio de Opticos de Puerto
Rico” (law #245 of Sept. 3, 2003).
You must be licensed and collegiate to be a practicing optician in
the state of Puerto Rico.

Fit and dispense optical
aids using a prescription written by a doctor.

Assist patients in lens
and frame selection.

Measure the shape and size
of the eye for contact lenses and select the appropriate
material.

Evaluate a patient's
prescription and appropriate measurements, and prepare the work
order for the optical laboratory.

Use optical tools and
gages to make sure that the glasses or contact lenses are
exactly as you ordered them.
Complete insurance forms,
maintain inventory, patient files and lab records.
