The focus of this study is to examine the hypothesis that a reduced DNA repair capacity (DRC) is a susceptibility factor for non-melanoma and melanoma skin cancers in Puerto Rico. In order to accomplish these general objectives, studies with the following specific aims are proposed: (1) Specific aim 1: Determine the DNA repair capacity of adults without skin cancer (controls) in Puerto Rican populations. (2) Specific aim 2: Determine the DNA repair capacity of non-melanoma (BCC and SCC) skin-cancer patients and compare them with controls. (3) Specific aim 3: Determine the DNA repair capacity of melanoma skin-cancer patients and compare them with controls.

Molecular mechanisms regulating the oxygen-activation/induction of manganese superoxide dismutase.

The goals of this research were to:

Test the hypothesis that oxygen induces the activity of MnSOD by increasing the synthesis of MnSOD protein and levels of translatable MnSOD mRNA.

Test the hypothesis that oxygen increases the transcription of the MnSOD gene.

Mechanisms of UV-B induced free radical oxidative damage in bovine lenses and human fibroblasts

The goals of this research were:

To develop studies aimed at obtaining a better understanding of the mechanisms by which exposure to biological fluxes of UV-B can cause oxidative damage to bovine lenses, lens epithelial cells, and to human skin fibroblasts.

The second aim of this project was to provide rigorous research training to graduate and undergraduate students that have been traditionally under-represented in science and the NASA community.

DNA repair and susceptibility to UV-induced basal cell carcinoma in Puerto Rican populations.

The goal of this research was:

To examine whether reduced DNA repair can be used as a biomarker for the diagnosis of sunlight-induced carcinoma in Puerto Rican populations.
