299 nuevos profesionales de la salud completan grados en Ponce Health Sciences University

88 se graduaron en medicina

299 estudiantes completaron grados en diferentes campos de la salud en la Cuadragésima Primera Colación de Grados de Ponce Health Sciences University (PHSU). Esta es la cantidad de graduados más alta de la universidad.  De estos, 88 obtuvieron el grado de Doctor en Medicina. También se otorgaron grados en maestría en Ciencias Médicas, doctorado en Ciencias Biomédicas, doctorados en Salud Pública, maestría en Salud Pública, doctorado en Psicología Clínica, maestría en Pscicología Clínica y bachillerato en enfermería.

“Si bien estamos muy orgullosos de estos logros, sabemos que aún queda mucho por hacer. Seguimos enfrentando un escenario de salud pública difícil, por lo que es importante que cada sector identifique formas en las que puede aportar soluciones para ofrecer mejor atención y servicios de salud para manejar el impacto y las secuelas del COVID-19. Puerto Rico y el mundo puede contar con Ponce Health Sciences University para continuar el fortalecimiento de la oferta académica en carreras de salud, así como con nuestro compromiso con la excelencia en la investigación clínica y científica. Continuaremos apoyando a nuestras investigaciones y reclutando nuevos investigadores altamente calificados para unirse al equipo, apostando a un futuro prometedor”, dijo el Dr. David Lenihan, presidente y CEO de la PHSU.

Por su parte, el rector de PHSU, el Dr. José Torres Ruiz, destacó que esta clase graduada enfrentó escenarios complicados para el país que les permitieron crecerse, no solo en sus respectivas disciplinas de estudio, sino como seres humanos. Esto en referencia a que muchos de ellos ayudaron a los que sufrieron las consecuencias del huracán María, los terremotos y los que sufren las consecuencias del COVID-19. “Allí estuvieron muchos de ustedes, aportando sus conocimientos y dejando el corazón en esos momentos difíciles. Por eso llevan todo lo que necesitan y más para unirse a los profesionales de la salud que luchan por ayudar a preservar la vida en este momento histórico”.

Como oradora invitada, la ceremonia contó con la participación de la Dra. Caroline Palavicino-Maggio, facultativo de Neurobiología de la Escuela de Medicina de Harvard University. Esta exhortó a los graduandos a que no se limiten ni permitan que nadie diga que no puede lograr sus metas, si no que esto sea un impulso para alcanzar lo que sueñan y se propongan.

Ponce Health Sciences University es una institución universitaria con un enfoque en las disciplinas de Medicina, Psicología Clínica, Ciencias Biomédicas, Salud Pública y Enfermería. Desde 1977 ha desarrollado profesionales altamente capacitados en el campo de la salud. Cuenta con un centro educativo en Santurce que ofrece una Maestría en Ciencias Médicas, Maestría en Psicología Escolar y un Doctorado en Psicología Clínica. 299 New Health Care Professionals Earn Their Degrees at Ponce Health Sciences University

88 medicine graduates

299 students earned their degrees in different health care fields at the forty first commencement ceremony at Ponce Health Sciences University (PHSU). This is the university’s largest graduate class to date, with 88 of them earning a Doctor of Medicine degree. Other degrees granted this year include Doctor of Biomedical Sciences, Doctor of Public Health, Doctor of Psychology, as well as master’s degrees in Medical Sciences, Public Health, and Clinical Psychology, and bachelor’s degrees in Nursing.

“While we are most proud of these achievements, we know there is still more to be done. We are still facing a difficult public health scenario and it is important for each sector in Puerto Rico to identify ways in which it can contribute solutions that provide better health care and services to handle the impact and the aftermath of COVID-19. Puerto Rico can count on PHSU to continue strengthening the academic offer in health care careers, as well as our commitment to excellence in clinical and scientific research. We will continue supporting our current researchers and recruiting new, highly qualified researchers to join the team. We are betting on a higher future,” said Dr. David Lenihan, President and CEO of PSHU.

PHSU Chancelor, Dr. José Torres Ruiz highlighted that this graduate class faced complex social scenarios that took place in the country; scenarios that allowed them to grow, not only in their respective academic fields, but also as human beings. He refers specifically to the fact that many of them helped victims of Hurricane Maria, the 2020 earthquakes, and people dealing with the consequences of COVID-19. “Many of you were there, contributing through your knowledge and serving from the heart in those difficult moments. That is why you have everything you need and more, to join other health care professionals fighting for and helping preserve life in this historic moment.”

Dr. Caroline Palavicino-Maggio, Harvard School of Medicine’s Neurobiology facultative, was the guest speaker at the ceremony. She advised students to not set limits for themselves, nor to allow others to impose limits upon them in reaching their goals. On the contrary, to use it as fuel to keep pursuing their dreams.
