Epidemiological Intelligence Community Network (EpI-Net)

Period 1:

November 2020 - November 2022 NIMHD

Our mission in period 1:

  • The Epidemiological Intelligence Network (EpI-Net) is a collaborative research project with the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and its initiative for Rapid Acceleration in Diagnosis in underserved populations (RADxUP). EpI-Net is part of a collaborative of more than 70 projects located throughout the United States focused on understanding the reasons and reducing the uneven impact of COVID-19 on those most affected by the pandemic.
  • Train lay community leaders on the use and application of COVID-19 early detection epidemic intelligence tools.
  • Identify and understand the individual (beliefs and behaviors), social, cultural, and contextual factors facilitating the adoption and adherence to routine COVID-19 testing and prevention practices.
  • To test EpI-Net interventions’ preliminary impact on increasing COVID-19 testing uptake and prevention practices among socially vulnerable communities in PR.

What we do?

We are interested in learning and working with community leaders in Puerto Rico. We are interested in learning about their perception of the risk of contagion of COVID-19, prevention practices, challenges to access COVID tests, and recommendations to achieve accessibility to the test.

EpI-Net seeks to increase the accessibility to detection tests for COVID-19 and increase the acceptance of prevention practices in epidemiologically vulnerable communities in Puerto Rico.

EpI-Net conducts vaccination clinics that are brought directly to the communities that this emerging disease has most impacted.

As a public health initiative, EpI-Net conducts educational activities for community leaders and members to increase their knowledge of health issues and inform the response to COVID-19 to strengthen and improve the health of our communities.

Period 2:

Period 2: October 2022 - June 2023 DSPR

Our mission in period 2:

The Epidemiological Intelligence Network (Epi-Net) is part of a collaboration with Department of Health of Puerto Rico (DHoPR) focused on the evolution and importance of genomic surveillance during a public health response and reducing the uneven impact of COVID-19 on those most affected by the pandemic.

  • Train lay community leaders on the use and application of COVID-19 early detection epidemic intelligence tools.
  • Enhancing community surveillance network focus on SARS-CoV-2 genomic surveillance, testing uptake and prevention practices among socially vulnerable communities in PR.
