Amaiz-Pena Laboratory at PHSU/PRI

Post-Doctoral Fellow

Job Title:

Post-Doctoral Fellow at Dr. Guillermo N. Armaiz-Pena’s Laboratory

Description:
The Armaiz-Pena laboratory at Ponce Health Sciences University (PHSU) / Ponce Research Institute (PRI) is currently seeking a post-doctoral fellow who is interested in cancer psychoneuroimmunology, cancer immunology, or cancer biology. The laboratory has been awarded a 5-year NIH R01 grant. The Armaiz-Pena lab provides an encouraging environment with hands-on mentorship, institutional career development opportunities, and several NIH-sponsored grants, including U- and R-level awards. The laboratory team is focused on understanding how distress affects cancer progression, specifically the tumor immune microenvironment, and supporting the development of psychological and pharmacological interventions to mitigate these effects. We offer a salary based on NIH standards, including full benefits such as health insurance and PTO. The position’s starting date is open to negotiation, but the ideal candidate will be available by Summer 2024 or earlier.

Responsibilities:

The successful candidate will contribute to a project integrating research using human populations and experimental approaches to understand how stress-induced signaling pathways alter ovarian tumor-associated immunity, particularly immunosuppressive cell types. The project aims to assess anti-inflammatory medications that may mitigate these effects. The goal is to identify mechanisms by which chronic stress and distress enhance early and late disease progression to provide new targets for cancer interception.

Qualifications:

The ideal candidate must have a Ph.D. in cancer biology, cancer immunology, biomedical sciences, or related fields (candidates completing their Ph.D. during Spring/Summer 2024 are encouraged to apply). The candidate should be familiar with mouse models to study cancer with a preference for ovarian cancer. The candidate should be willing to handle mice and perform animal surgeries. The candidate should also be familiar with molecular techniques such as ELISA, qRT-PCR, WB, IHC, IF, and flow cytometry/sorting. Additionally, the candidate must be proficient in English writing and speaking. Being bilingual is a plus but optional.
